| On March 12, 2008, the Babaa - Maths Nightmare avatar was finally re-released since the installment of the new version of Maths Nightmare, after being inactive for months.
...I think we can all agree that, now the avatar is available, it's time for an updated guide to better suit the newer version of the game. And so, I present to you, without further ado, Lachtaube's "Babaa - Maths Nightmare" avatar guide!
On the day the new version of the game was release, I was ecstatic. Let's face it, the old version was much harder and I was one of hundreds of Neopians who couldn't stand a chance at being in the top 50 of the high score list. But this new version had simpler math, and a particular timing method that I will get to later.
... BUT, the major problem I found with this new version, was that I was too fast for the game.
Now, I'm not the world's fastest typer, so I'm positive other Neopians have experienced the same issue: click on the bubble, type in your answer, and press enter, all under two seconds. Eventually, one bubble would get "stuck" and unless you went back and "deleted" your (invisible) answer several times, you couldn't enter anything. I found this to be a huge waste of time. And I immediately gave up.
When I found out the avatar was re-released, I tried again, knowing I would fail in the game's catch twenty-two (that is to say, in order to get a high score you need to be fast and beat the time: but if you were fast enough, you would ultimately lose time, and lose early in the game.)
Game Setting Suggestions
This is why I strongly suggest to start with the game at the lowest possible quality, and the smallest possible screen. Notice how the graphics move much faster than before? And despite its small size, you can still clearly see each number well enough to figure out an answer.
Some General Tips
- The code letimiyasleep will reset your clock. However, it does not seem to work in all browsers, or every time...
- You do not need to press "enter" every bubble to submit your answer! If your answer is correct, the bubble will pop itself, saving you the time of having to hit enter for every one.
Choosing a Game Mode
Which brings me to my second point: DIVISION! I've found that, while division has daunted me since the second grade, it is the easiest method of reaching a high score in this game. Why should you choose (4.) Division over (5.) Random? Because you don't have to think about it. While choosing the 'Random' problem types gives you a higher score per problem answered, it takes you much longer to figure out the answers for several reasons.
- You have to look for the addition, subtraction, division, or multiplication symbol.
- After finding the symbol, you have to jerk your brain around and try to figure out how to solve it. If you had just finished solving a 9 / 3 problem (answer 3,) you may be faced with a 9 + 3 problem (answer 12,) but you just answered that problem, didn't you? The answer was 3... But wait, there's that addition symbol!
(See? We just wasted a good couple of seconds just trying to figure out what we were looking at.)
- You don't need a calculator. In choosing Division problems (AND the Potato Counter level of difficulty,) the answers are all very simple and are as follows: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 20, 25, 30 (I have yet to see any higher answer.) What's so bad about overing your fingers over the '3, 4, 5' keys and jumping over to '2', '6', '1,' and '0' occasionally?
- Big dividing numbers = small answers. For example: 40 * 20 = 800... 40 + 20 = 60. 40 - 20 = 20! BUT, 20 / 20 = 1. Simple, no?
Choosing a Difficulty
After choosing your type of problems (hopefully by this point I've convinced you to carry on with (4.) Division!), you want to choose your level of difficulty. They are present in order of difficulty: "Easy Peasy," "Potato Counter," and "Brain Tree," and your 'answer score' is multiplied by the number of Babaas representing that level of difficulty. (Easy Peasy x 1, Potato Counter x 2, Brain Tree x 3.)
I personally choose Potato Counter because the answers are not too difficult, and my score is doubled from an Easy Peasy score. If you feel comfortable on the Brain Tree level, go for it!
Playing with Sound?
Turn your sound off. You don't have to, but I strongly recommend it. What is more frustrating than thinking you've just about outdone yourself, when suddenly the alarm clock goes off and practically screams "IN YOUR FACE"? Which finally brings me to timing.
The Alarm Clock
The Alarm Clock in the bottom left-hand corner of your screen will count the seconds. You may have noticed while you were playing before, sometimes you can get pretty far in the game, but sometimes the game ends around level three. Why is that? Well, if you complete all three levels cumulatively before one minute (60 seconds,) the clock will reset, and your game will continue. The clock resets at the end of certain key levels: 3, 7, 12, 17...
But it will not reset a full 60 seconds! The hour hand will move ahead one hour, but the alarm will still go off at 12:00 midnight! THIS is why speed is dire: this is why you cannot afford to have a high-quality, sluggish game that won't let you type in your answers as fast as you can.
Be wary, if you fail to answer any one problem for approximately ten seconds, the Babaa will fall from the fence, and onto the clock, waking it and Imiya.
Getting the Avatar
You still get the avatar in the same method as the old version of Maths Nightmare: be in the top 50 on the high score list. This is most easily done on reset day, or the first of the month.
