Theory: We have been told that you are more likely to get the avatar if you do Edna's quests on Halloween, but so far this hasn't been confirmed :) (Submitted by angelsk)
Rainbow Theory? Many reports of the avatar seem to come from completing a three-item quest for a "Rainbow" recipe. If you get the avatar, please use the "Submit Correction" link below and let us know how many items, and for what recipe, you got the avatar with. Thanks!
Statistical Update: From submissions gathered over the past two years, 100% of them have reported that the avatar was received after completing a three-item quest. (There have been some old reports of two-item quests working, although this is incredibly rare and unconfirmed.) A good strategy to work on this avatar would be to only complete three item quests each day! (As always, the avatar is still RANDOM when doing this, but by only completing three item quests, you increase your chances of getting the avatar.)
Edna, ah, the wicked witch of the Haunted Woods. She's known for the worst prizes, a ridiculously hard to get avatar and always being in a foul mood! Doesn't she sound lovely? She's my best friend.
As Edna and I are 'befriended' I thought it would superb to tell you how I got her avatar, and how you can get it if you try! This definitely is one of those "I give up" avatars for many of you, but always doing her quests will pay off! To start off, let's go through the Edna Basics.
The Edna Basics
You can only do ten quests a day. That's it! Make sure you don't do Taelia, etc. if you really are working for the Edna avatar. I had given up, yet did ten quests every day for TWO days and got the avatar. Some call me lucky, others think I pushed her into her cauldron. I will never tell the truth. -wink-
Have the Shop Wizard up in another window. She does ask for some expensive items, so if you are a premium user, you may want to use the Super Shop Wizard. I did any of her quests regardless of price, however if you are on a budget it may be best to set a limit. Although being loyal to Edna does work!
... Where's my avatar??
During those ten daily quests she will normally reward you with junk and no avatar -- the real prize you want. However, sometimes she is generous! She has even been known to give out another avatar item, Snorkle Snout. You may want to still price check everything before you donate it if you have one percent of doubt about the price!

Now, remember not to get mad at Edna. She's a rather foul witch as it is, and you look like a tasty morsel to her. Just do her quests and leave, hassling the poor witch does you no good. After you have done her ten quests and not gotten the avatar, be patient! You get ten more chances tomorrow!
To check to see if you got her avatar, you can always check your list. However, if you were like me at first and thought it would be at the top of the page you are wrong. After turning in all the items, her avatar event will pop up BELOW your prize item. Then you can throw a party with all your friends and eat Edna Gruel. Yipee.
Once again, you have to try every day! Using the Shop Wiz to minimize time spent on quests does help. It gets you through the quests faster, so you can get out of her tower and wait patiently for the next day to come. You can get on with your day and forget about not getting the avatar.
Budgeting
Once you do get it, you may not want to visit her ever again! It can take a long time to get it. Time is Neopoints; your bank account can dwindle quickly on Edna's quests if you don't set a limit. A 5,000 Neopoint per quest limit may be a nice help on the maximum to spend.
After you see the Edna - Cackle! event, congratulations! You're now the new envy of all your friends. Didn't that time and patience pay off?
